Omar Pandit — The Man Behind Our Name
The family behind the name
From Kashmir
to Paisley
Omar Pandit was Gary Stapleton’s great-great-grandfather, a Hindu from Kashmir whose story has been passed down through the family.
According to family history, Omar travelled to Scotland and shared knowledge of Kashmiri shawl designs and textile craftsmanship with mill owners in Paisley. The family account places him in Paisley during the early 1880s. His precise age, date of arrival and subsequent fate are unknown. This account of his contribution is presented as family history.
The Sanskrit word पण्डित — Paṇḍita is associated with scholarship, learning, wisdom and specialised knowledge. Choosing the Pandit family name acknowledges this heritage and its connection with careful judgement and professional relationships.
